Nigeria’s election chief warned that fabricated results, false announcements and manipulated audio could mislead voters and weaken confidence in the 2027 general elections. Joash Ojo Amupitan spoke Monday at the opening of a two-day summit on electoral information integrity in Abuja.
BusinessDay reported that Amupitan warned people could create fake results with no connection to authentic polling-unit records and use them to mislead the public or incite violence before INEC announces official results.
Amupitan also said AI could assist election administration. Punch and Vanguard reported that he cited potential uses in voter registration, logistics planning and data analysis, while warning that generative AI could make deceptive material easier to produce. “Artificial Intelligence, AI, is not an enemy of democracy,” he said, according to the two outlets.
The summit organizers said the Nov. 2–3 meeting would examine how institutions, media, technology platforms and citizens could respond to manipulated electoral information. The Sun reported that Amupitan called for stronger cooperation among electoral bodies, media organizations, technology companies, security agencies, regulators and civil society groups.
INEC’s official calendar schedules the presidential and National Assembly election for Jan. 16, 2027, followed by governorship and State House of Assembly elections on Feb. 6.
