A lot can be said about the Nintendo Switch but not too many gamers might think that it is indestructible. Based on a recent stunt that involves dropping the console from 1,000 feet in the air, however, this might just be the case. Not only did the console not smash to pieces, it even remained functional.
Now, just to be clear, this piece is not meant to encourage gamers to start dropping their Switch units from the rooftops. Rather, it’s meant to highlight the lengths with which Nintendo went to make sure that its products are durable. As for the stunt itself, it was performed by Unlockriver.com and posted the results over on YouTube.
The stunt was performed by taping the Switch to a drone, which then took the console up into the air. Once it reached its target altitude, the drone dropped the console. The test starts at around the 2:00 mark, so viewers can just skip to that part if they are in a hurry.
Upon landing, the unit hit the ground on its left Joy-Con side, which received the majority of the damage. Looking at the footage, it’s obvious that this particular part of the console could no longer be used, Polygon notes.
On the other hand, everything else was left miraculously intact. The screen was not damaged in any way, the right Joy-Con was still functional, and it could still play games. All of this is a testament to just how much care Nintendo put into creating its gadgets, which is likely one of the reasons the company is having so much trouble finding enough supplies to actually make the things.
It also helps to highlight the misconception that its sleek frame impresses upon people, Kotaku notes. While the Switch doesn’t look like it could withstand even light punishment, the stunt just proved that it is more than it appears.
