At this point, no one can deny that Hello Games is trying very hard to win over some of the players that abandoned its procedurally generated space exploration/survival video game. With tons of free updates, no micro transactions, and no paid downloadable content, the British development studio is making quite the effort for practically nothing in return. Unfortunately, it seems nothing they have done so far is making any real impact, and the upcoming land vehicle addition seems fated to be much the same.
Based on the video that the studio released, it would seem that players are going to get up to three types of land vehicles that they can then use to ride around their home planet. The update is designated “Path Finder” (no connection to Mass Effect: Andromeda’s own Pathfinder title) and will also come with a few other tweaks that include being able to leave messages for other players to find, Forbes reports.
With regards to the vehicles themselves, players have the option to ride what looks like a dune buggy, which should be perfect for mobility. They will also have access to something that looks like an armored truck, which presumably is meant to make mining for minerals and resources much easier. Finally, there’s the hovercraft, which could make traversing water surfaces more accessible.
Then again, even when putting all of the potential benefits that these land units can offer, it doesn’t seem to make sense when the players already have access to a ship. Not only would it be faster, can carry resources, and have no problem going over water, it can go up into space. So, would this update be a pointless endeavor on Hello Games’ part?
As for the ability to leave messages meant for other players in the minute chance that they actually find the home world, it only sounds cool when ignoring the fact that it may never be read by anyone. In any case, players will find out for themselves soon enough. The update will come out later this week, Engadget reports.
