EDISON, N.J., Aug. 10, 2017 -- On August 9th, Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC) provided 146 academic scholarships totaling $62,000 to children and grandchildren of Union Carpenters and NRCC staff members at the Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth, New Jersey.
The NRCC Scholarship Fund recognizes students who have exceptional academic performance and standardized testing scores in addition to: significant involvement in extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation and personal interviews. The recipients, who come from each of the NRCC’s five-state jurisdiction in New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland, are attending a variety of colleges across the country, such as Rutgers University, the University of New Haven and the University of Delaware.
Each applicant was eligible for various amounts, ranging from one-time book grants of $250 to scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 per year. To maintain the annual NRCC scholarship, recipients must maintain a "B" average each college semester and remain a full-time student. Since 1996, the scholarship has given out approximately $2.5 million in scholarships to more than 400 students.
John Ballantyne, Executive Secretary-Treasurer and President of the NRCC Scholarship Fund, believes in taking a strong commitment to education.
“Since our inception, the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters has been committed to providing educational opportunities to individuals in the Northeast region,” said Ballantyne. “The academic achievements, community commitment and personal qualifications of the applicants are truly outstanding, and we are thrilled to provide these young adults with a scholarship to help them further their education.”
