Nvidia will finally be holding its online GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2020 keynote on May 14. Reports also say that the company will likely be unveiling a new graphics card during the event but it won’t be the highly anticipated upcoming flagship, the RTX 3080.
The GTC 2020 was originally set to be held from March 22 to 26 in San Jose, California but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. “This decision to move the event online instead of at the San Jose Convention Center reflects our top priority: the health and safety of our employees, our partners and our customers,” Nvidia said in a statement, according to The Verge.
The online version of the canceled event will finally push through almost two months after the original schedule. The GTC 2020 keynote will be pre-recorded, not live-streamed, and can be viewed on Nvidia’s YouTube channel at 6 a.m. PT or 9 a.m. ET on May 14, according to Tech Radar.
“Huang [Nvidia’s CEO] will highlight the company’s latest innovations in AI, high-performance computing, data science, autonomous machines, healthcare, and graphics during the recorded keynote,” Nvidia said in a statement.
What got gamers interested in is the graphics part of the statement. Nvidia is expected to use the event to unveil a new graphics card.
However, Tech Radar wrote that it won’t likely be the highly anticipated RTX 3080. According to rumors, it will likely be a new server GPU. However, it is still possible that the company might tease RTX 3000 products in the online event.
The GeForce RTX 3080, as well as the RTX 3070, will be based on the new Ampere architecture. They will more energy efficient and will be significantly improved performance-wise compared to their predecessor.
For instance, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will be up to 40 percent faster than its predecessor. It will feature 5376 CUDA Cores, 12 GB of VRAM, and a 384-bit memory bus.
There is no official RTX 3080 release date yet at the moment. However, Tech Radar wrote that the upcoming GPU won’t be launched until August.
