Fans of the “Serious Sam” series of games will be more than familiar with the whacky, self-aware theme of the games, and will also know that the developer behind the title is the Croatian team fittingly called “Croteam.” Well, there is now a VR version of the game called “Serious Sam VR,” but it doesn’t play like previous titles in the series. More than that, it seems that “Oculus” tried to bribe the team to make the game exclusive to “Oculus Rift.”
“Serious Sam” is basically the humorous first-person shooter that “Duke Nukem” was supposed to be. Fast-paced, high-octane, full of hordes of enemies, and an arsenal of weapons that would make “Doom” players jealous, fans of the game already have expectations of what the title is supposed to be. However, GamesRadar observed that the VR version of the video game has one major difference compared to it non-VR companions; players can no longer run around.
Gameplay-wise, “Serious Same VR” forces players to stand in just one spot while wave upon wave of enemies come charging. The variety of weaponry is still considerable and the graphics are up to par. Unfortunately, by giving up a crucial part of what made the series what it is, the developers might alienate some fans.
Fortunately, the VR FPS is just a side-project, according to Gamespresso, and the main game that occupies the majority of the team’s attention is still “Serious Sam 4.” The team even tweeted about it. As such, fans can look at the studio’s attempt at a VR title as more of a first try, which they can then base their next attempt on to produce a better game.
Just to be clear, Serious Sam VR is a fun separate side project, we are still working hard on Serious Sam 4 as our prime goal. Be patient!

Speaking of ‘Serious Sam VR,” it seems “Oculus” tried to bribe “Croteam” in order to get more exclusivity out of the game, according to ExtremeTech. The team turned down the offer by the “Facebook”-owned company, but it does highlight the lengths to which “Oculus’ will go to reel in as many exclusive titles as they can.
