With the Jump Fest 2020 already over, fans certainly have to wait in 2020 for any update on the production of “One Punch Man” season 3. Companies attached to the production of the anime adaptation have yet to make an official announcement. But there are other ways to estimate the possibility of a series renewal.
‘One Punch Man’ season 3: What to expect based on season 2’s Blu-ray/DVD sales so far
Pop culture fans often do not have plenty of patience when waiting for updates or confirmation of the next anime seasons. So they have to be a little more resourceful in finding clues that could give them insights on the fate of their favorite shows, such as with the case of “One Punch Man” season 3.
With that, fans may want to check out the show’s season 2 Blu-ray/DVD sales. This is one of the parameters often considered in the rumor mill to predict if an anime is getting renewed. Unfortunately, the reported number does not look good for “One Punch Man” season 3.
Someanithing.com charts show that season 2’s volume 1, released in late October, only sold 1,265 copies in its first week. Volume 2, which hit the stores in late November, only sold 1,328 units on the same duration.
It is still too early to definitively compare these numbers with the season 1 home media sales because season 2’s volumes 4 to 6 will not be released until 2020. However, Redditor u/Adab1za commented that these are major downgrades compared to season 1 volume 1’s first-week sale of 8,887 copies. Someanithing also shows that season 1’s Blu-ray/DVD sales had an average sales of 10,522 copies.
Whether the mixed feedback on the studio change in season 2 (from Madhouse to J.C.Staff) affected these numbers is difficult to gauge. But it should be noted that Blu-ray/DVD performance is not the sole basis for ordering “One Punch Man” season 3.
‘One Punch Man’ season 3: Is the series still popular after its controversial second season?
Overall, “One Punch Man” is undoubtedly still one of the most popular manga and anime series around the world. Fans who were very critical of season 2’s production still want to see “One Punch Man” season 3 get made, but by a different director and studio. The other half of the fanbase remained more supportive of the second season and look forward to seeing season 3.
