OnePlus confirmed it is launching a proper sequel to its mid-range phone from 2020 that is now officially called OnePlus Nord 2 5G. Details about its specifications are still under wraps, but the company announced one crucial piece of information about its processor.
Tech fans noticed that the official Instagram page for the OnePlus Nord deleted all its posts in the last few days. It now appears to be part of the company’s plan to mark a new era for its well-received mid-range series. The social media page currently has three new posts that all signal the imminent arrival of the OnePlus Nord 2.
The social media posts do not reveal much about the device, though. One detail that OnePlus is willing to share at this point is the chipset that will power OnePlus Nord 2. Unlike the recently released OnePlus Nord CE 5G and OnePlus Nord N200, the upcoming device will not use an SoC from Qualcomm.
OnePlus confirmed that it is using an “exclusive” version of the MediaTek Dimensity 1200. Technical specifications of the chip are still unknown, but the company said it was the result of its partnership with MediaTek that will offer an “AI-enhanced experience that takes photography, display technology, and gaming to a new dimension.” It is then likely that the core specs of the exclusive Dimensity 1200 will be similar to the off-the-shelf chipset that has one “ultra core” Cortex-A78 (up to 3GHz), three “super cores” Cortex-A78 (up to 2.6GHz), and four efficiency cores Cortex-A55 (up to 2GHz).
Since the primary changes in OnePlus Nord 2’s chipset seem to be focused on photography performance, it is curious what camera specs the device is going to offer. Leaker Gadgetsdata claims the device would sport a 50MP Sony IMX766 as the main sensor for a triple-camera array on the back. For selfies, the phone reportedly sports a 32MP Sony IMX615 lens.
The same source also mentioned that the OnePlus Nord 2 would ship with a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate. The device is confirmed to launch in India with a promo already live via Amazon for customers in the country. The OnePlus Nord 2 is rumored to launch on July 22, but tech fans should take that with a grain of salt for now.
