OpenAI has reportedly begun early discussions with advertising technology company The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD) as it explores ways to expand advertising capabilities on its popular ChatGPT platform. According to a report from The Information, the talks highlight OpenAI’s growing interest in building a scalable advertising ecosystem while continuing its broader monetization strategy.
Sources familiar with the matter said the artificial intelligence company may initially rely on external partners such as The Trade Desk to help manage and deliver advertisements within ChatGPT. The collaboration could allow OpenAI to leverage established ad technology infrastructure while it develops its own internal advertising tools over time.
The move comes as OpenAI recently started introducing ads within ChatGPT’s free and lower-priced subscription tiers. This step reflects the company’s efforts to generate new revenue streams as the AI platform’s global user base continues to grow rapidly. By integrating advertising, OpenAI could create additional income opportunities while maintaining premium ad-free experiences for higher-tier subscribers.
The Trade Desk is a well-known player in the digital advertising industry and operates a widely used demand-side platform (DSP). The company’s technology allows brands and advertisers to automate the buying of digital ads, optimize campaign performance, and measure results across multiple channels. Its expertise in programmatic advertising and ad placement could help OpenAI quickly scale its ad offerings within ChatGPT.
Partnering with an established ad-tech firm may give OpenAI a strategic advantage as it enters the competitive digital advertising market. At the same time, the company is reportedly planning to develop its own advertising technology infrastructure in the long term. Building internal ad systems would allow OpenAI to maintain greater control over how ads are delivered and optimized within its AI-driven products.
If the discussions progress into a formal partnership, the collaboration could mark an important step in transforming ChatGPT into not only a leading AI assistant but also a new platform for digital advertising innovation.
