OpenAI is set to air its first-ever Super Bowl commercial during Sunday’s game, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. This move marks OpenAI’s entry into commercial advertising as it competes with tech giants like Google, which promoted its AI capabilities during last year’s Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl remains one of the most valuable advertising platforms, drawing a massive audience and generating significant buzz. The 2024 game attracted an estimated 210 million viewers, making it a prime opportunity for brands to showcase creativity and gain widespread recognition.
Ad spots during the 2025 Super Bowl have reportedly sold for up to $8 million for 30 seconds, an increase from last year’s $7 million. The game, scheduled for February 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET, will take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, home to the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.
OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman and backed by Microsoft, launched ChatGPT in late 2022. The AI-powered chatbot quickly gained traction, surpassing 300 million weekly active users within two years. The company is also in talks to raise up to $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation.
In December, OpenAI hired Kate Rouch as its first chief marketing officer, signaling its intent to strengthen brand presence. The company has yet to confirm details about the ad, but this strategic move could help solidify its position in the rapidly evolving AI market.
With increasing competition from Google and other AI players, OpenAI’s Super Bowl commercial aims to capture attention and further drive adoption of its AI products.
