“Orange Is the New Black” fans just got a rude awakening as the season 6 finale gives Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) an early release. Considering that the main premise of the show is following the life of Piper Chapman, fans are worried that “Orange Is the New Black” season 7 may be the show's last season.
“Orange Is the New Black” is based on the real-life Piper Kerman's memoirs. Kerman was charged with money laundering and was sentenced to 15 months of detention, but only served 13 of those months. Kerman is now a spokesperson for different non-profit organizations that help female inmates reintegrate into society. With Schilling's Piper Chapman getting the same early release treatment at the end of season 6, fans can expect “Orange Is the New Black” season 7 to focus more on the fictional Piper's post-incarceration life.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show's executive producer, Tara Herrmann, confirms that “Orange Is the New Black” season 7 will definitely focus on the conflicting feelings within Piper Chapman due to her early release. Fans will remember that Chapman recently got a prison wedding with Laura Prepon's Alex Vause – a character who has been part of Piper Chapman's history since “Orange Is the New Black” season 1. Herrmann mentions that such relationships will be the bedrock of conflict for the newly released Chapman.
“Orange Is the New Black” season 7 will also focus on what Piper Chapman will fill her time with after her release. While the show has a lot of characters that it is leaving behind bars after season 6's finale, fans can expect Chapman to reconnect with the friends and family that she made inside prison throughout season 7.
While the narrative of Piper Chapman coming to terms with her new freedom and potentially following in the footsteps of the real Piper Kerman sounds like the end game for the series, Tara Herrmann and any other high ranking individual in charge of the show's longevity have not made statements that “Orange Is the New Black” season 7 will be the show's last.
With “Orange Is the New Black” season 6 just airing on Netflix last June, fans of the show can expect “Orange Is the New Black” season 7 to air sometime in mid-2019.
