‘Outlander’ season 3 is set to feature the aftermath of the epic Battle of Culloden and will follow Jamie and Claire as they lead lives separate from each other. Production is currently underway. Meanwhile, older Fergus and Marsali are set to join the new cast for the incoming season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, production for the incoming season of ‘Outlander’ already began in early September. Season 3 will cover Diana Gabaldon’s third novel “Voyager” in the time-travel series of the same name and will cover the Battle of Culloden as well as its effects on the surviving characters, specifically Sam Heughan’s Jamie Fraser.
In the preceding season, Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) traveled to France to try and stop the rebellion from happening. Jamie befriended Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Andrew Gower) but failed to prevent the Jacobite plans. Because of Jamie’s close relationship with Prince Charles, he became a high officer in the army and ended up training his own regiment.
The Jacobite army then marched North to face the British troops in the Battle of Culloden, the final uprising of 1745, but were defeated due to their lack of equipment and proper training. Jamie and Claire were also forced to separate leaving Jamie’s fate unknown to her.
According to Deadline, the new season will pick up after Claire returns to her old life in 1948 while Jamie recovers from the aftermaths of losing her as well as surviving from the battle.
Executive producer Ronald D. Moore teased during a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, “It just felt like for the TV show, we’ve been promising this for a while and it just felt like we should have something… We should give the audience some sense of what happened on that moor.”
Heughan and Balfe are set to reprise their roles as Jamie and Claire. Sophie Skelton will reprise her role as Bree, Jamie and Claire’s daughter, while Richard Rankin will return as Roger Wakefield.
Two more key roles for season 3 have also been confirmed. César Domboy is set to play an older version of Fergus and Lauren Lyle will play Marsali, one of Laoghaire’s (Nell Hudson) daughters. Domboy’s Fergus is described as “devilishly handsome” and a romantic, while Marsali is a lovely 18-year old with a rebellious nature.
‘Outlander’ season 3’s premiere date is yet to be confirmed as of the present but it was renewed for on Starz last June 2016. It is a historical drama television series developed by Ronald D. Moore and produced by Sony Pictures Television and Left Bank Pictures.
