It is still difficult to determine when “Overlord” season 4 will be released at this point. But fans can roughly estimate the arcs that could be covered on the next anime installment.
The first three seasons of the same title light novel series were done consistently with three volumes made into 13 episodes released per installment. If this is not going to change in the anime’s future run, “Overlord” season 4 is likely ending with a major cliffhanger.
'Overlord' season 4 spoilers: Next installment ends in the middle of The Paladin of the Holy Kingdom arc
First, it should be noted that official parties attached to the anime adaptation have yet to confirm if “Overlord” season 4 is already in production. But given that seasons 1 to 3 had 13 episodes based on three light novel volumes each, the fourth anime series installment is expected to get its stories from volumes 10 to 12.
However, volume 12 is the first part of The Paladin of the Holy Kingdom arc, and its story continues and ends in volume 13. If “Overlord” season 4 would maintain the same 13-episode format adapting three volumes of the light novel at a time, the series’s 52nd episode is most likely a huge cliffhanger.
It should not be much of a problem in “Overlord” season 4, given that the first part of the arc was wrapped up nicely in the light novel. Volume 12 concluded with Ainz’s major plans falling apart. The arc ends with the city of Kalinsha being swarmed by thousands of demi-humans, the race that is Ainz Ooal Gown’s main adversary in this arc.
'Overlord' season 4 release date: Anime gets delayed for at least another year?
The challenges Ainz will face at the beginning of “Overlord” season 4 will be unique, but not as challenging as the one mentioned above. He is coming from a recent victory that led to the establishment of the Sorcerer Kingdom. The light novel events suggest that the first half of the next season would focus on Ainz’s troubles as a new nation ruler while his detractors plot against him.
As for the release date of “Overlord” season 4, anime fans could be in for a longer waiting period this time. The light novel is currently stuck at 13 volumes, while the 14th light novel installment is reportedly delayed until March 2020. This could mean that the best fans could hope for next year is a confirmation that a fourth season will be made.
