Within a month, anime fans will mark the first anniversary of the “Overlord” anime hiatus since season 3 concluded. With the status of production still unknown at this point, the wait for “Overlord” season 4 could even be extended until 2021.
‘Overlord’ season 4 release date predictions: Anime returns after over 2 years?
The production and release date cycle of the “Overlord” anime series is complicated, making the premiere of “Overlord” season 4 hard to predict. As can be seen in the first three seasons, it did not follow a rigid timeline. There were two years and four months hiatus before season 2 followed season 1.
Season 3 aired just two months since season 2 concluded, making these two installments seemed like a two-cour release. So for the premiere date of “Overlord” season 4, nothing is certain at this point except for the fact that producers have not confirmed its production yet.
With the making of “Overlord” season 4 at an apparent standstill, the anime series can experience another years-long hiatus just like after season 1. One factor that could affect this is the release of new light novel volumes. Volume 13 was the latest installment released that ended the two-part arc “The Paladin of the Holy Kingdom.” Volume 14 is expected to follow in late 2018, while series creator Kugane Murayama has said before that he plans to end the light novel in volume 17.
‘Overlord’ season 4 plot, episode count: Next installment to exceed 13 episodes?
Each season of anime adapted stories from three volumes of the light novel series and told in 13-episode runs. If the same logic is applied in “Overlord” season 4, that would mean the next 13 episodes will end in the first part of “The Paladin of the Holy Kingdom.”
Producers could opt to adapt the light novels this way and have a grand cliffhanger by the end of “Overlord” season 4. But Monsters & Critics suggested that the next season could also double the usual episode count and rely on having filler episodes focused on the supporting characters. But this could still force anime producers to stretch four volumes of light novels too much in a single season.
