South Korean steelmaker POSCO will lead the creation of a graphene industry ecosystem in Pohang city, which would utilize corporate, government as well as academic resources.
The group also includes the Pohang City Government, Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), and Graphene Square, the country’s leading graphene startup.
Often referred to as a wonder material for its nano-structure, elasticity, and strength, graphene is used in multiple industries including semiconductor, electronic display, and solar cell.
The ecosystem will conduct primary research on graphene, develop products for commercialization, and create new jobs in related industries.
Pohang City Government sees graphene as the city’s next material, after steel, that would drive economic growth of the region.
The local government will work on attracting graphene buyer companies to Pohang and establishing institutions that provide international standard assessments on graphene.
