Tech industry pariah Palmer Luckey was placed in a corner a few months ago for his support of then presidential candidate Donald Trump before he was finally fired from Oculus. Now that he is free of corporate suppression, Luckey has finally shown his true colors by being open about his political opinions. He is backing it up with action too by creating a virtual border wall to complement the actual wall of President Trump.
The story was reported by The New York Times, which highlights some of the things that led to Luckey’s downfall and his rise to become a part of the President Trump cheerleading squad. According to anonymous sources, it would appear that the former Silicon Valley wunderkind is developing a new kind of technology that will be deployed to the country’s borders and even to military bases.
Unsurprisingly, one of the people involved in the project is reportedly Peter Thiel, yet another tech industry veteran who became widely vilified due to his support of President Trump. Now a presidential technology adviser, Thiel is said to be supportive of the initiative. When contacted by the publication, Luckey confirmed that he was working on something top-secret and related to defense.
“We are spending more than ever on defense technology, yet the pace of innovation has been slowing for decades,” Luckey wrote in an email. “We need a new kind of defense company, one that will save taxpayer dollars while creating superior technology to keep our troops and citizens safer.”
The startup that Luckey created to work on the project will supposedly user emerging technologies such as LIDAR and Infrared sensor, The Los Angeles Times reports. Those familiar with the current developments in the tech industry will likely already be familiar with those technologies since they are integral to the development of autonomous driving. These technologies would then be deployed to monitor the borders and prevent illegal immigration.
