The progress that eSports has made to become a major force in entertainment has been staggering. All of a sudden, sponsors are lining up to put their brands on teams of hugely popular events such as Blizzard’s Overwatch League. It seems Brendan Greene AKA “PlayerUnknown” wants a piece of that action by making PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds an eSports monster.
It’s no secret that PUBG is a global phenomenon, though, it has been overshadowed of late by the much more popular Fortnite Battle Royale. Even so, it’s undeniable that the millions of gamers who actually bought the game are still playing it, so Greene does have a platform to build an eSports empire on. Unfortunately, as PC Gamer points out, the game comes with a lot of challenges that stands in the way of achieving that goal.
Unlike Overwatch or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which already have their bugs under control and technical aspects smoothed out, PUBG is still famously a glitch-ridden mess of a game. Many of its bigger issues have been addressed since its Early Access days, but players are still reporting a ton of issues, which can be a problem when making an eSports out of it.
There are bound to be protests when a contestant dies simply because the vehicle they were riding glitches out and explodes for no reason, as PUBG vehicles are known to do. This hasn’t stopped Greene from building an eSports team, though, based on his statements to Eurogamer.
"We're building an esports team globally now, between the US and Europe and Asia, and really trying to develop out the tools we need to support esport organizations and players in order to give a good foundation," Greene said. "So, that's where I want to see [PUBG] in three years, I want to see it as a considered esport with events taking place in big stadiums and sort of year long leagues, that's what my dream for battle royale has been, that's where I want to see us go, and looking at what we're doing this year I really see that as a great chance."
