Police said Saturday that a fire left Bavaria’s Kehlsteinhaus largely destroyed, as investigators examined the cause and a person was provisionally detained without a confirmed link to the blaze.
About 200 emergency and rescue personnel were involved in the operation, Bavarian police said. Fire crews from six municipalities took part, alongside mountain rescue teams, the Bavarian Red Cross and police.
Police said the remote site was difficult for fire engines to reach and responders needed heavy breathing apparatus to enter. No one was found inside, and police reported no injuries. Traunstein Criminal Police are investigating under the direction of the Traunstein public prosecutor’s office, Bavarian police said. Police have not established whether the detained person was connected to the fire. EconoTimes previously covered the provisional detention and police inquiry.
The Kehlsteinhaus was built in 1937–38 during the Nazi period. The site began operating as a mountain restaurant in 1952. Before the fire, it also contained an exhibition on the building’s history.
