Razer is introducing a new kind of gaming keyboard in the form of the “Ornata” and the company intends to change the game forever with it. Aimed at providing gamers with the best of both worlds that are typically separate when it comes to high-performance keyboards, the “Ornata” is built to be both functional and comfortable.
Gaming keyboards can usually be bought as one thing or the other, as Engadget points out, with the one having mechanical switches that allow for extremely fast feedback and the other being a more comfortable setup thanks to the “membrane rubber domes.” With the “Ornata’s” "Mecha-Membrane" keyboard, however, Razer is essentially getting rid of the distinction.
The hybrid system provides the comfort that the soft touch of the membrane is known for and the response of the mechanical keys. If everything turns out exactly as Razer promises, gamers could be looking at a future where they no longer have to choose between one kind of keyboard or the other.
Then again, it’s still too soon to tell if the “Ornata” really does deliver on all its promises since it will likely need to be in the hands of gamers for some time before any reliable feedback comes pouring in. With gamers being who they typically are, Razer is likely going to get quite a spirited hail of opinions from both sides.
Whatever the case may be, it’s a rare thing to see a peripheral maker be willing to take risks with experiments like this and it can only be good for consumers. There is certainly a demand for devices that can deliver the kind of performance comfort that the “Ornata” is meant to provide. Now, the only question is whether or not it will succeed.
The standard version for the “Ornata” that has green colors will fetch for a price of $79.99, Tech Times reports. For the “Ornata Chroma” that has over 16.8 million colors, customers will need to shell out $99.99.
