‘Riverdale’ season 1 is set to premiere on The CW on January 2017 as revealed by The CW. The dark Archie Comics adaptation will also get its own one-shot comics, set for release on February.
According to USA Today, The CW recently unveiled the premiere date for ‘Riverdale’, a teen drama television series based on the characters from the original Archie comic books by Archie Comics. The new series is set premiere on the network on January 26, 2017, Thursday at 9 p.m. ET, pushing long-running series ‘Supernatural’ to Thursdays at 8 p.m.
The pilot episode is written by Archie Comics’ very own chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, best known for his contributions to The CW’s ‘Arrowverse.’ In addition to Sacasa and Berlanti, the series is also executive produced by Sarah Schecter and Jon Goldwater.
An excerpt from the press release for ‘Riverdale’ posted on Comics Alliance reads, “The live-action series offers a bold, compelling take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.”
The series will be a much darker take on the original wholesome comic book series that gained popularity in the 1990s. Cast members include KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Ross Butler as Reggie Mantle, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper, Marisol Nichols as Hermione Lodge, and Luke Perry as Fred Andrews.
A 48-page one-shot comic book inspired by the series will also be released in February, according to MTV. Written by Sacasa, the comic book will tell the story of Archie and his friends before the events of the television series.
‘Riverdale’ is an upcoming teen drama television series scheduled to premiere on The CW on January 26, 2017.
