‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ will feature Darth Vader’s return to the franchise. Director Gareth Edwards admitted that bringing the iconic ‘Star Wars’ antagonist back had its own set of challenges. He also revealed that he was intimidated by the character on the filming set.
According to The Week, Edwards revealed that audiences can expect that the iconic ‘Star Wars’ villain Darth will have a role to play in the first film of the franchise’s standalone anthology series. Edwards said, "He's got such a gravitational pull, the second he shows up you just get sucked into Darth Vader… So it was a process to try and figure out how to pepper that in a way that felt right."
He added that depicting the series’ antagonist had its own challenges. He said, “Everyone is making their own movies… They'll all have their own style and voice…[But] it's such a fine line. If you go slightly to the left, it's not 'Star Wars.' It's some other sci-fi movie. If you go slightly to the right, you're just copying what George [Lucas] did… Trying to navigate this thing where it's new but feels fresh was the dance that was the process of making the film.”
According to Yahoo! Movies, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that although Darth Vader’s role isn’t necessarily a huge one, it will still leave a deep impact on the film. She said, “I will say that it’s not a huge role, but to be perfectly honest somebody like Darth Vader stepping into any movie is definitely a big deal… He has a very, very important part in the movie.”
James Earl Jones will return to lend his voice to the iconic villain formerly known as Anakin Skywalker. The 85-year old multi-award winning actor is best known for his voice roles in the ‘Star Wars’ film series beginning with George Lucas’ first ever release ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, which premiered on May 1977. David Prowse portrayed the actual Darth Vader one could see on-screen but Jones did the voice work.
Edwards admitted that Darth Vader’s presence on the filming set even intimidated him. According to ABC News, he said, “I was just reduced to being a kid and I looked at the rest of the crew and everyone was just looking like they were four years old. Going up to direct him was like, ‘Hi there, hi, my name's Gareth… You suddenly realize, when you do a shot you look on the monitor and you get goosebumps again.”
Riz Ahmed, who is set to portray the rebel pilot Bodhi Rook, also joked, “He's a very passive-aggressive man. I'm not afraid to say that… He would kill the vibe on set.”
‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film scheduled to be released on December 16, 2016. It is intended as the first standalone film in the ‘Star Wars’ anthology and will follow a group of rebel spies on a mission to steal plans for the Death Star. It is produced by Lucasfilm and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
