Russia claimed it intercepted and destroyed at least 3,124 Ukrainian drones over the past week, according to data released by the country’s Defence Ministry and reported by the state-run RIA news agency. The reported surge in drone warfare highlights the growing intensity of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, particularly across European Russia and the Moscow region.
RIA stated that the largest number of drones were reportedly shot down on May 13 and May 17, when Russian air defense systems allegedly destroyed 572 and 1,054 drones respectively. Most of the intercepted drones were said to be targeting areas in western and central Russia, increasing concerns over the expanding reach of Ukrainian drone operations.
The escalation comes after what officials described as Ukraine’s largest overnight drone attack on Moscow in more than a year. Local authorities confirmed that at least four people were killed during the strikes, including three victims in the Moscow region. Several buildings and infrastructure sites were reportedly damaged as emergency crews responded across affected areas.
Russian officials continue to accuse Ukraine of intensifying long-range drone attacks in an effort to disrupt military logistics and pressure key regions inside Russia. Meanwhile, Ukraine has not publicly commented in detail on the latest drone operation reports.
The ongoing drone conflict has become a major aspect of the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides increasingly relying on unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance and attacks. Military analysts say the rise in drone warfare is reshaping modern combat tactics and increasing security risks far from the front lines.
As tensions remain high, international observers continue monitoring developments closely amid fears of further escalation in the region.
