Philippine politics plunged deeper into turmoil after Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa reportedly escaped authorities following a dramatic confrontation involving gunfire inside the Senate complex in Manila. The controversial senator, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over his alleged role in the Philippines’ bloody anti-drug campaign, fled during a chaotic standoff between Senate security personnel and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents.
The shocking incident unfolded late Wednesday after reports surfaced that government agents were preparing to arrest Dela Rosa. The former police chief, known as one of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s closest allies, had been hiding for months before resurfacing earlier in the week to participate in a crucial Senate leadership vote. His appearance helped a pro-Duterte bloc regain influence in the chamber, intensifying the ongoing political battle between supporters of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice-President Sara Duterte.
Witnesses described scenes resembling a political thriller as Senate security forces locked down the building while heavily armed personnel took positions around the complex. Gunfire later erupted near a neighboring government building, sending journalists and staff scrambling for safety. Authorities are now investigating whether the confrontation was intentionally staged to help Dela Rosa escape custody. No injuries were reported during the exchange.
Dela Rosa remains unapologetic about his involvement in Duterte’s controversial drug war, which led to thousands of deaths and triggered international scrutiny. The ICC continues pursuing accountability for alleged crimes against humanity connected to the campaign. Meanwhile, Philippine officials insist they will cooperate with international legal obligations and prevent the senator from leaving the country.
