U.S. special envoy Jeff Landry arrived in Nuuk, Greenland, on Sunday as the Trump administration continues efforts to strengthen American influence in the Arctic region. Landry, who currently serves as governor of Louisiana, was appointed by President Donald Trump last year to promote closer ties between the United States and Greenland, including discussions related to American strategic interests on the island.
According to local media and footage released by Greenlandic broadcaster DR, Landry was seen leaving a plane upon arrival in Nuuk. He is expected to attend the “Future Greenland” business conference taking place on May 19-20 alongside U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Howery.
The visit comes amid ongoing political tensions surrounding Trump’s previously stated ambition of bringing Greenland under U.S. control. Both Greenlandic and Danish authorities have repeatedly rejected the idea, emphasizing that Greenland is not for sale and remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Business Greenland, the organizer of the conference, clarified that Landry was not formally invited but noted that the event is open to all registered participants. The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen said the visit is intended to expand economic cooperation, strengthen people-to-people relations, and improve understanding between Greenland and the United States.
Earlier this year, Greenland, Denmark, and the United States agreed to launch high-level diplomatic negotiations aimed at easing tensions over the Arctic island. However, no official outcomes from those talks have been announced so far.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen recently stated that discussions with Washington include the possibility of increasing the U.S. military presence in Greenland, highlighting the island’s growing geopolitical importance in the Arctic.
As of now, no official meetings between Landry and Greenlandic political leaders have been confirmed during his visit.
