Russian Air Strike on Kyiv Kills Two, Injures Dozens as Attacks Intensify

A Russian air attack on Kyiv early Wednesday left one person dead and 24 others injured in the Ukrainian capital, while another person was killed and 21 wounded in the surrounding Kyiv region, according to local authorities. The overnight assault caused significant damage to warehouses, residential areas, and infrastructure as air defense systems responded to the barrage.

Kyiv's military administration reported that seven locations across the city were hit during the attack, which began shortly after midnight. Air raid sirens remained active for more than an hour as explosions echoed across the city of nearly three million residents.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a warehouse near the city center was completely destroyed, with emergency crews rescuing two people from the debris. Search-and-rescue operations continued amid concerns that additional victims could still be trapped under the rubble. Among the 24 injured was an ambulance driver, while four people remained in critical condition.

The strike also sparked multiple fires in warehouses and storage facilities. Initial reports suggesting a 20-story residential building had caught fire were later found to be inaccurate. Klitschko added that a large blaze erupted on the outskirts of Kyiv after missile debris landed near a residential building.

Emergency services also responded to an ammonia leak triggered by the attack, with crews working to contain the hazardous situation.

Residents reported hearing multiple explosions as Ukrainian air defense units attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones. Authorities in the wider Kyiv region confirmed an additional fatality and 21 injuries resulting from the same wave of attacks.

Russia has stepped up its aerial assaults on Kyiv in recent weeks, carrying out several large-scale strikes on the Ukrainian capital over the past month. The latest attack highlights the continuing escalation of the conflict, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
