Russian stocks closed largely unchanged on Sunday, with the MOEX Russia Index ending the session flat at 0.00% while marking a new 52-week low. The lack of movement across major Russian equities reflected a subdued trading environment on the Moscow Stock Exchange.
Among the stocks listed on the MOEX Russia Index, AFK Sistema PJSC (MCX: AFKS) finished unchanged at 13.54. Aeroflot PJSC (MCX: AFLT) also ended the session flat at 42.50, while ROSSETI PJSC (MCX: FEES) remained steady at 0.05. Due to minimal market activity, the same companies appeared among both the session’s best and worst performers, as share prices showed virtually no movement throughout the trading day.
Market breadth was equally stagnant, with neither advancing nor declining stocks outnumbering one another on the Moscow Stock Exchange. Aeroflot shares remained at a 52-week low, highlighting continued pressure on the airline sector. Meanwhile, ROSSETI shares stayed near five-year lows, reflecting ongoing challenges for the utility company.
The Russian Volatility Index (RVI), a key gauge of expected market fluctuations based on MOEX Russia Index options, remained unchanged at 29.61. Despite the flat reading, the index reached a new three-month high, indicating that investors continue to monitor potential market risks closely.
In the commodities market, gold futures for August delivery declined 1.72%, falling by $73.00 to settle at $4,172.90 per troy ounce. Crude oil futures for August delivery slipped 0.12% to $76.54 per barrel. In contrast, Brent crude oil for September delivery gained 0.90%, rising to $80.05 per barrel.
Currency markets showed modest strength in the Russian ruble. The USD/RUB exchange rate fell 0.44% to 73.00, while EUR/RUB declined 0.35% to 83.72. Meanwhile, the U.S. Dollar Index Futures remained unchanged at 100.62.
Overall, Russian financial markets experienced a quiet session, with the MOEX Russia Index remaining flat as investors assessed commodity prices, currency movements, and broader market conditions.
