The Russian Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart), a government agency that serves as a national standardization body of the Russian Federation, has announced the formation of a technical committee that will focus on the standardization of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLTs).
The formation of the technical committee was initiated by "National Information Systems".
“[Blockchain] is a digital platform that records and verifies transactions in a public and secure manner based on decentralized solutions. Appeared initially as technologies that facilitate the conduct of operations in crypto-currencies, today the technologies of the distributed registry (block) are finding more and more fields of application around the world. In recent years, these technologies are quite actively spreading in the Russian Federation,” the announcement said (loosely translated).
In 2016, the Technical Office of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved the creation of a new technical committee dedicated to blockchain standardization. The technical committee included 35 states at the time of its formation. However, Russia abstained from joining ISO/TC 307.
Earlier this year in March, Standards Australia published a roadmap for blockchain standards that could be undertaken in the development of blockchain standards by ISO/TC 307 Blockchain and DLT.
The deadline for the submission of applications for participation in the technical committee on standardization is 11 October 2017.
