State Bank of India (SBI) Research's analysis of India's 2023-24 household survey found online purchase/payment reporting far lower for vegetables than clothing, though the two categories used different reference periods.
The Oct. 30 report, “India’s Consumption Journey,” put the vegetable rate at 1.32% and clothing at 19.97%. The survey asked about vegetables over seven days and clothing over 365 days, so the percentages cover different reporting windows.
India’s Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) gathered responses from 261,953 households between August 2023 and July 2024. The sample included 154,357 rural households and 107,596 urban households.
SBI Research also listed online purchase/payment reporting at 4.29% for groceries, 1% for fresh fruit, 0.62% for dry fruit and 0.59% for eggs, fish and meat. Across consumption items, 45.6% of households reported an online purchase or payment for at least one item; 54.4% did not.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said the online purchase/payment information was collected as auxiliary data to validate survey responses, not to compile official estimates or indicators. The percentages are SBI Research’s analysis of those responses, not official MoSPI measures.
The survey records whether households reported an online purchase or payment; it does not establish why they chose a channel. The figures also are not a separate count of orders on grocery or quick-commerce platforms.
