Many people around the world are in dire need of better prosthesis after losing limbs or hands, and it would seem that the future of the industry lies on robotic replacements. The creator of “Segway,” Dean Kamen is set to provide the world with the most advanced robot prosthetic arm for the general market later this year and it promises to grant almost life-like dexterity.
As Digital Trends put it, the world is a lot close to a future where humans could have super human strength, speed, agility, or even intelligence through cybernetic enhancements than most realize. Thanks to the “Life Under Kinetic Evolution (LUKE)” prosthetic arms that Kamen will be providing to the public, people who have lost limbs are on step closer to regaining their independence.
“LUKE” was approved by the FDA two years ago, but it wasn’t until recently that the arm became ready for deployment. Speaking of which, Mobius Bionics gets dibs on being the first to distribute the robotic limb, which will likely be available by the end of 2016.
Kamen has been working on the arm for the better part of a decade, which was initiated by DARPA’s search for new ways to replace the arms lost by combat veterans. This is when Kamen’s “DEKA Research” company started creating the new breed of prosthetics, which eventually led to the “LUKE.”
As Engadget points out, though, there are still no details regarding the price of one of the arms or what kind of requirements will need to be fulfilled in order to get one. Interested parties can register their interest on the site of Mobius Bionics.
With regards to the features, it would seem that most of the offerings, when it was unveiled have remained intact, though there’s no telling which parts were changed or improved until the arm is tested. In any case, the “LUKE” promises to allow substantial motor control such as holding a glass of water and lifting heavy things.
