With so many companies employing remote access getting outed for spying on their customers, it’s amazing that yet another sex toy maker was caught spying on their customers. What’s more, it was spying on them during intimate moments without even asking for permission. The company has since admitted to this gross violation of privacy but has insisted on calling it a bug.
In a Reddit thread, a user claimed that a company called Lovense, which is based in Hong Kong was recording their intimate session without permission through a vibrator app called Lovense Remote. The app managed to record up to six minutes of audio, which was then stored in the local folder of the app.
The user admits that to giving the app access to the phone’s microphone and camera but insisted that it was only for chat purposes. The app was never supposed to record during sex. It would seem that other users have encountered the same problem.
In response to the controversy, a user who claims to be a representative of Lovense posted a response on Reddit. Apparently, the unauthorized recording was just a mistake and was due to a bug.
“As explained in the thread I linked above, we do not store any audio files on our servers. For sound feature to work, we have to create a local cache file. This file is supposed to be deleted in the end of each session but because of a bug in the last version of our Android app, the file wasn't deleted successfully. With this bug, the cache file was stored on the user's device until the next session where the new session overwrites on the previous cache file,” the representative wrote.
According to the representative, the bug has since been fixed with the latest update and all cached data will supposedly be deleted after each session.
