It’s six months deep into 2019 and BBC has yet to break their silence regarding a potential “Sherlock” Season 5. While some would label this as a sign that the crime-solving drama is truly dead, others remain optimistic that the network might still be on the fence what to do with the series, We Got This Covered reported.
After all, the show’s massive following could provide the BBC with stellar viewer numbers yet again. The problem is Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s other responsibilities. The former still needs to reprise his role as the Sorcerer Supreme in “Doctor Strange 2,” while the latter is also in the same boat with a possible appearance in the “Black Panther” sequel. With their schedules full, it would be difficult for both stars to do “Sherlock” Season 5, especially since they may also accept other projects out of the MCU.
Meanwhile, show writers Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss are also quite busy with their upcoming “Dracula” series, with both creators saying they’re prioritizing it above any other project. It’s for this reason that BBC is maintaining their silence about “Sherlock” Season 5. There’s no denying that the network would be delighted if the crime-fighting duo returns since it’s expected that it will draw a lot of audiences if it finally happens.
Gatiss himself previously said that even if the discussion is started on “Sherlock” Season 5, it won’t be until 2022 or 2023 that anything substantial would surface. As for its potential storyline, there’s still a lot of source materials that the writers can take inspiration from.
Among them is the “Red-Headed League” and “Engineer’s Thumb,” both of which have been deemed by Gatiss as a great plot to adapt in television. Putting all of these into consideration, it’s understandable why BBC is still remaining mum about “Sherlock” Season 5. Hopefully, everyone involved in its creation could one day free themselves from other professional obligations as the presence of Sherlock and Holmes has been sorely missed by its huge fan base.
