A Colorado journalist faced a harrowing ordeal when a man claiming to be a Marine attacked him, questioning his citizenship and invoking the phrase, "This is Trump’s America now." The December 18 incident has led to felony charges against the assailant, Patrick Egan, who now faces accusations of bias-motivated crimes, second-degree assault by strangulation, and ethnic intimidation.
The Attack and Its Allegations
The confrontation unfolded as Ja’Ronn Alex, a Pacific Islander and multimedia journalist for KKCO/KJCT in Grand Junction, returned to his news station after completing field reporting. According to the arrest affidavit, Egan, 39, allegedly tracked Alex for 40 miles before confronting him in the station’s parking lot. Shouting racial slurs and questioning Alex’s citizenship, Egan reportedly tackled and choked the reporter, declaring, “This is Trump’s America now.”
The situation escalated when Egan demanded to see Alex’s identification and began strangling him. Surveillance footage partially captured the attack, which ended when Alex’s coworkers intervened and restrained Egan.
Charges and Fallout
Egan, a driver for Sunshine Rides, faces severe legal repercussions for his actions. Mesa County law enforcement officials have charged him with multiple felonies, including second-degree assault by strangulation, and a misdemeanor count of harassment. Egan was released on bond but is expected to appear in court on January 2.
Sunshine Rides General Manager Kelly Millan condemned the attack, issuing a statement emphasizing the company’s commitment to core values. “This type of behavior has no place in our society, and I strongly condemn it,” Millan said, confirming Egan’s suspension pending further investigation.
Victim’s Background and Reaction
Alex, described in his station bio as a Detroit native and 2023 graduate of Clemson University, has built his career across various regions in the Eastern and Southern U.S. Following the incident, Alex reportedly told authorities he believed he was targeted due to his race, making the attack particularly distressing.
The violent confrontation has drawn sharp criticism from media organizations, advocacy groups, and local officials, who have called for accountability and denounced the growing hostility faced by journalists nationwide.
Public Reaction: Netizens Speak Out
Social media users expressed outrage and solidarity with Alex, with reactions ranging from condemnation of the attacker to broader concerns about rising intolerance.
- @JusticeForAll tweeted, “This is horrifying. A journalist attacked for doing his job. Where does it end? #ProtectThePress.”
- @PacificVoices added, “Ja’Ronn Alex’s courage is commendable. This hate-filled act should be a wake-up call for all of us.”
- @MediaWatchdog stated, “When journalists are unsafe, democracy suffers. Patrick Egan’s actions must face the full weight of the law.”
- @CivicStrength posted, “It’s disgusting that hate like this is still happening. Wishing Ja’Ronn Alex strength and justice.”
- @StandWithReporters shared, “Shocking to see a reporter attacked for simply existing. America, we must do better. #JusticeForJaRonn.”
- @VoiceOfReason remarked, “This is beyond unacceptable. Kudos to Alex’s colleagues for stepping in. Let’s hope justice prevails.”
What’s Next for the Case
Egan’s upcoming court appearance on January 2 will mark the beginning of a legal process that could bring justice to Alex and set a precedent for addressing hate-motivated violence. Meanwhile, the incident underscores the challenges journalists face in an increasingly polarized environment.
