The last time that moviegoers watched a “Shrek” movie was in 2010, and that was the fourth movie installment titled “Shrek Forever After.” It took a while before “Shrek 5” was confirmed, but fans are just happy that another one is coming.
It seems that the confirmation of the fifth film in the franchise came a bit late because NBCUniversal bought Dreamworks, the studio that produced one of the favorite animations of all-time. The fifth movie in the “Shrek” series is just one of the animated films that the bosses of NBCUniversal want Dreamworks to revive, so a plan for it was laid out as early as 2016.
Prepping for the new movie sequel
As soon as it was announced that “Shrek 5” is happening, NBCUniversal’s CEO Steve Burke told investors that he appointed producer Chris Meledandri to oversee the production of the movie. He said that he thinks the producer will be able to breathe new life to the movie franchise.
“He (Meledandri) is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect ‘Shrek’ and add value as we create new franchises,” NME quoted the NBCUniversal head as saying after officially announcing the film. “The overall goal will be to maximize revenues by creating popular characters which can be licensed out for lucrative spin-off merchandise and theme park attractions.”
Also, the script for “Shrek 5” is complete already since Michael McCullers immediately went to work on it after he was hired to be its new screenwriter. He revealed that he reinvented the story because it was “sort of called for.”
“I finished that script which I really, really, really love. It's really personal to me,” Cinema Blend quoted McCullers as saying. “It's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't really reveal.”
Predicted release date
There were reports that emerged stating that “Shrek 5” was originally scheduled for release in 2019, but it did not happen because it gave way to “Puss in Boots” movie sequel. And now that it was delayed, based on the detail posted on the film’s IMDb page, the much-awaited animation is coming in 2022.
