One of Dreamwork Studios’ most popular animated movies is “Shrek” and in fact, this film has already released four sequels and fans are waiting for the fifth one today. The waiting is understandable because “Shrek 5” was already confirmed as early as 2014 but it was officially announced in 2016 after Chris Meledandri was assigned to take charge in its production.
The fifth movie was planned after NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Studio and the latter expressed its interest in re-launching the animation to get the studio going. NBCUniversal only picked a handful of films that they will revive from the list of DreamWorks originals.
As “Shrek 5” was confirmed, it was also clarified that it will not be a sequel to the fourth movie but will it offer an independent story. This is why they are calling the fifth movie a reboot and not a sequel in the franchise.
Pre-production work details - Movie is already in the works
Now that it was confirmed that “Shrek 5,” the reboot is happening, there were a number of signs that indicate it is already in the works. Aside from assigning Chris Meledandri to handle the production, NBCUniversal also hired a new writer who will take over and write a fresh story.
It was said that the studio outfit wants “Shrek 5” to be different from the first four sequels so they changed the writer who cand deliver what they want. For this, they hired Michael McCullers who immediately went to work after being given the assignment.
In 2017, McCullers announced that he completed the script of “Shrek 5.” He shared that he reinvented the movie just like what NBCUniversal wants. “I finished that script and it's really personal to me and it's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't really reveal,” McCullers told Cinema Blend.
Surely, by assigning a production head and new writer, and the completion of the script, there is no doubt that “Shrek 5” is still in the works and pre-production is on-going. Then again, DreamWorks or NBCUniversal should release new updates now since it has been three years since fans heard something new from them.
The movie’s theme and release date
Finally, based on the previous statements of the execs, “Shrek 5” will feature a futuristic story. It will be modern and the youths of today will definitely relate to the situations presented in the film. For the release date, this movie may possibly be released in 2023 since 2022 is early if the actual filming has not started yet.
