SMITHFIELD, Va., Nov. 13, 2017 -- Smithfield Foods, Inc. is pleased to announce a $36,000 donation to nonprofit organizations as a result of its 2017 Environmental and Sustainability Excellence Award Program. This program recognizes employees and facilities for excellence across the company’s sustainability pillars: Animal Care, Environment, Food Safety & Quality, Helping Communities, and People. As part of the program, award-winning facilities in the U.S. and internationally receive up to $3,000 to distribute to local charities of their choice.
“At Smithfield, our employees take pride in the opportunity to support our communities,” said Bill Gill, assistant vice president of sustainability for Smithfield Foods. "As a global food company, with operations worldwide, we’re honored to have our award-winners continue their positive impact on the places we call home.”
Smithfield’s award-winning facilities distributed donations to 17 different nonprofit organizations that support a variety of causes ranging from animals, children, education, environment, public safety and many more. These facilities led the way in helping the company save more than 86.5 million gallons of water, more than 18.8 million kilowatts of electricity, more than 39 thousand dekatherms of natural gas and reduce solid waste generation by more than 30.3 million pounds annually.
