SpaceX and T-Mobile have reportedly initiated tests for their highly anticipated Starlink Cellular satellite service. Speculation emerged after users noticed satellite activity on their phones, fueling excitement ahead of the planned beta program launch in late 2024 or early 2025.

Users Spot 'Satellite' on iPhones as SpaceX and T-Mobile Test Starlink Cellular Service

According to reports, SpaceX and T-Mobile have initiated testing for their forthcoming Starlink cellular satellite service.

A few individuals recently asserted that SpaceX and T-Mobile were conducting tests of their Starlink cellular satellite service. The service is frequently referred to as Starlink Cellular or Starlink Direct-to-Cell.

After Reddit user u/ommmyyyy posted about a perplexing change in their iPhone 14's status bar, the speculation regarding Starlink Cellular's tests commenced.

“Satellite appeared on my iPhone 14 status bar today instead of T-Mobile; this was in Madison, Wisconsin, by the way,” said the Reddit user in the post.

A few Redditors responded to u/ommmyyyy's post, most of which can be categorized into two major groups. One argument was that "Satellite" refers to Apple's Emergency SOS feature, which is accessible on iPhone 14 units and later—nevertheless, a small number of Apple iPhone users swiftly disproven the hypothesis.

“You can tell who in this thread is an Android user by those who keep claiming this is Apple’s system.

“This is not what the Apple Satellite system looks like when in use, by the way. Easiest way to tell: Apple’s system has a satellite icon instead of the LTE symbol. Additionally, when used, it will have a green or orange dot on the Dynamic Island. You have to actively connect to it with a whole UI that tells you where to point your phone; it’s not automatic and can’t just happen by accident,” commented Reddit user Lancaster61.

The opposing perspective is that SpaceX and T-Mobile are conducting experiments for Starlink Cellular.

“This is definitely Starlink and T-Mobile playing around as more upgraded Starlink satellites get launched. To my knowledge, they actually deployed another batch the other day,” said u/Bob_A_Feets.

The Cybertruck Guy account on X appeared to experience the same situation as u/ommmyyyy on his iPhone. The "Satellite" service enabled the X account holder to send and receive messages while in a moving vehicle. The Cybertruck Guy associated the service with SpaceX and the T-Mobile Starlink Cellular service.

Starlink Cellular Beta Program Slated for Late 2024 as SpaceX Ramps Up Satellite Launches

In a recent interview, Jim Cramer was informed by T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert that Starlink's direct-to-cell beta program is expected to be launched between late 2024 and early 2025.

Initially, it was anticipated that Starlink Cellular would be operational by the autumn of 2024. Nevertheless, Seivert disclosed that SpaceX has 192 cellular satellites in Earth's orbit.

According to reports, approximately 300 satellites are required for Starlink Cellular to provide services in the United States. SpaceX COO Gwynn Shotwell informed the Texas House of Representatives last week that the aerospace company intends to launch 100 missions to increase the number of Starlink satellites in orbit.
