Square Enix is really laying on the marketing tricks for its upcoming “Final Fantasy XV” title quite thick. With yet another mobile game that’s tied to the universe of the 15th installment to the legendary franchise, the studio is reintroducing a 30-year-old title as well.
The previous mobile app game that the studio released was called “Justice Monsters Five” and it came out a while back to tepid response. As Kotaku notes, the app’s gameplay resembled a rather odd spin on the classic pinball series, with Final Fantasy characters and creatures plastered on the various obstacles.
For its next mobile offering, Square Enix is rummaging through its pile of old video games from the NES era and came up with “King’s Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon.” The mobile game is actually based on the old “King’s Knight” game that Square created in the late 80s.
The North American version came out back in 1989 and features one of the earliest works of the master composer Nobuo Uematsu, Polygon reports. The game was basically a scrolling title where players would shoot oncoming enemies or clear out obstacles as they came shambling down from the top. Based on the footage released in the trailer, however, Square seems to have added quite a few things for the revamped version.
“King’s Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon” is a multiplayer game and can be played with up to 4 people, working simultaneously to clear out obstacles in a 3D environment as well as shoot, hack, and blast their way through hordes of enemies. Aside from the action-oriented mechanics, the game also adds some RPG elements, which is only expected from Square. Finally, it’s free to play.
The game is also supposed to be massive hit within the “Final Fantasy XV” universe, along with “Justice Monsters Five.” As to whether or not it’s going to see similar success in the real world remains to be seen.
