When the official PC port of the legendary JRPG Chrono Trigger made its way to Steam, it wasn’t exactly the best version of the game in the world. In fact, it was viewed as more of the mobile port that was brought over to the PC than a genuine, optimized version of the game for the more powerful platform. Since then, though, Square Enix has been patching the game to fix many of the issues that players have had with it.
Among the features that came with the updates is the improved UI, which is now better suited to those playing on PC using keyboard & mouse and gamepads, USGamer reports. The launch version of the UI was problematic because it was originally based on the mobile version of the game, which meant that the command interface was intended for touchscreens.
Now, those clicking away using keys will find the experience much smoother than it was before. For players using gamepads, the game is now closer to its classic feel of the original.
Character graphics have also been updated to make them clearer, which means that they look less pixelated. The animated cutscenes have been improved, as well, with visuals being elevated quite a bit. Some scenes have also been improved in terms of display size, which makes it easier to see what’s happening.
Square Enix isn’t done, though, since it is apparently planning on releasing another patch on June, Siliconera reports. That update will focus a lot more on-screen layout, which will hopefully make playing on a widescreen monitor more bearable.
As a game that released back in 1995, Chrono Trigger was designed to work with boxy screens that have since become quite outdated. Thanks to these patches, fans of the classic game now have more reasons to play it other than for nostalgia.
