SpaceX's Starlink, which has built a satellite internet constellation of hundreds of spacecraft, is still making tremendous breakthroughs. The SpaceX subsidiary just announced that Starlink will now connect agricultural equipment like as John Deere tractors in rural areas of the United States.
Farmers and other workers frequently struggle to acquire internet access in their fields due to wide expanses and low population density. Today's announcement is Starlink's third major one in 2024, following the company's declaration earlier this month that it allows youngsters in Mozambique to complete their schoolwork through effective internet connectivity.
SpaceX's Starlink Could Soon Come To A Tractor Near You
The statement was made on Starlink's X page, and it appears like Starlink is taking the lead on this. The X post provided a few details about Starlink's cooperation with Deere. Deere plans to outfit its existing and new equipment with Starlink beginning later this year. Along with the post, Starlink included a photo of John Deere's S790 grain harvester with a flat, stand-alone Starlink dish visible, as per WCCFTech.
Starlink's presence in various industries has grown over time. SpaceX's Falcon 9 enables Starlink to dominate low Earth orbit (LEO) internet satellites. As a result, Starlink is the world's largest LEO satellite internet network, and its size enables SpaceX to form partnerships in profitable areas such as maritime shipping, air travel, and others.
In fact, one of the most significant announcements made by Starlink in 2023 was for maritime applications. SpaceX is the only firm in the world that can vertically and autonomously land medium-lift rocket boosters on autonomous drone ships in the ocean. This architecture necessitates reliable internet connectivity, even if simply for the live feeds that SpaceX has become known for.
SpaceX Enhances Global Connectivity with Starlink, Partners with T-Mobile for Satellite Cell Coverage
SpaceX has long aimed to provide access to consumers in remote places using Starlink. Elon Musk, SpaceX's CEO, has stated in multiple recent speeches that the goal of his company's internet service is not to gain market share from established broadband internet providers, but rather to expand global internet coverage by servicing underserved places.
In fact, one of Starlink's largest collaborations takes advantage of this. It has collaborated with T-Mobile to leverage the latter's network to provide satellite-based cellphone coverage to people who do not have access to tower coverage. On this front, SpaceX and Starlink kicked off 2024 on a high note, announcing that the first text messages on the LTE protocol had been successfully transmitted through unmodified phones using the Starlink network.
Other Starlink collaborations include agreements with airlines. According to official numbers released by Starlink, more than 70 airplanes were connected to the Internet as of October 2023. It further said that over 400 aircraft were awaiting the installation of the technology. Starlink's in-flight internet coverage agreements cover both commercial and private carriers. One significant agreement occurred in October when Qatar Airways announced that it would provide complimentary internet service on its flights via Starlink.
