“Station 19” season 3 is now poised as one of the biggest returning series for ABC reportedly in 2020. The show is now expected to gain more popularity as it is purportedly set to have weekly crossovers with one of the network’s most-watched series “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Fans might have already seen this coming. ABC recently announced that the show is renewed for a third installment and the “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Krista Vernoff takes the same line of work for “Station 19” season 3.
However, a follow-up report from Deadline made it clearer that there will be more connections between the two shows, aside from having the same showrunner. Phrasing it as having a “shared universe,” a source told the publication that weekly crossovers is eyed once “Station 19” season 3 goes on air.
With the rise of spinoff shows, crossover TV events have become an effective way to further introduce a sister show by directly attaching arcs to its original series. Fans have seen these happened several times on NBC’s trio “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago P.D.” This could then mean that characters of “Station 19” season 3 would often visit Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
A crossover episode with “Grey’s Anatomy” is nothing new for its spinoff show. However, it used to be a one-time event and with minimal effect on the running storylines of each series.
Along with this development, it has also been reported that “Station 19” season 3 will skip the fall premiere schedule and would be delayed until 2020. It is expected to allow writers and producers to craft a more comprehensive arc that would permit frequent crossovers.
“Grey’s Anatomy” season 16 is slated to premiere in September to headline ABC’s 2019 fall lineup. It usually takes a break following a winter finale. With “Station 19” season 3 set to be released in 2020, it hints at the crossover events happening within the second half of the original series.
