Steam gaming platform stops accepting bitcoins in Russia

Steam, an American entertainment software and technology company that offers instant access to games globally has stopped accepting bitcoins in Russia.

According to the customers in the country, the gaming platform is no longer accepting bitcoins. The crptocoinsnews.com reported that a user by the name ‘Eliot the Cougar’ complained that he was no longer able to buy Steam products with bitcoin. He noted that he had contacted the company’s support group but has not got any reply from them yet.

He mentioned in his complaint saying, “I’m not sure what is going on, and I couldn’t find any explanation. I don’t see the option to pay with bitcoin in Steam anymore.” Eliot mentioned that he recently on April 28 and May 14 bought games from Steam using bitcoins but could not buy now.

The cryptocoinsnews.com after creating a user account in the U.S. confirmed that bitcoins are still being used in other parts of the world, such as the U.S. There was a message on the discussion board Pikabo where a comment with the username ‘kvazipozitron’ mentioned that a message was posted on June 2 by Tim who is the technical support officer of Steam.

The message stated, “Unfortunately, payment in the Steam store using the Bitcoin no longer be maintained on the territory of your region. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Previously in the month of March, there was a proposal by the Finance Ministry in Russia to officially ban bitcoin in Russia. BitPay, leading bitcoin payment processor in the month of April announced that it is bringing bitcoin payment to Steam globally.

Though Steam has stopped accepting bitcoins, there are still few websites that sell Steam games globally and accepts bitcoins like steamgamesbtc.com, SteamBitShop.com etc.
