‘Stranger Things’ is yet to be renewed for season 2 but Netflix explained the reason for the delay. Meanwhile, star Winona Ryder admitted to getting overwhelmed by her fame as Joyce Byers.
According to Bustle, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos addressed renewal delays for the highly-popular science-fiction and horror web television series ‘Stranger Things’ during the Television Critics Association Press Tour.
Sarandos said, "We always want to take some time to be thoughtful about the process… When we first come out of the gate with something, we usually have a pretty good idea of where it's going to go, but it's sensible for us to take a little bit of time and let the show breathe. And with so many really falling in love with Season 1, and people who haven't really seen episodes of Season 1 just yet, let's focus on Season 1 right now."
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also admitted that they would be “dumb” not to give The Duffer Brothers a second season run. The show received positive reviews upon its release on July 15, 2016 and has attracted more viewers since. It pays homage to cult favorites from the ‘80s specifically works done by John Carpenter, Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, and George Lucas.
Show creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that their cast model for future seasons was inspired by the ‘Harry Potter’ film franchise, where their child actors grew up on-screen. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Matt Duffer said, “The dream is a Harry Potter situation.”
He went on to explain, “I love watching kids growing up on camera. So the idea seeing where these kids and these characters are one year later is cool to me. And it allows us to explore the mythology of our nether.”
Child actors Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, and Millie Bobbie Brown play major characters in the series.
Meanwhile, Winona Ryder’s performance as Will’s disgruntled mother Joyce received positive reviews from critics and fans alike. Ryder’s role catapulted her back to mainstream fame after featuring prominently in 1990s pop culture.
During an interview with Variety, the 44-year old actress expressed her surprise over her renewed fame. She said, “It’s been overwhelming but in a really great way. I was actually sort of suspicious at first. I’d never experienced anything like it. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in something that was getting so much attention. And back then it was a different kind of attention. We’d stay up all night and wait for the three papers, and have someone read them first, like, “Is it OK?”
‘Stranger Things’ is a science-fiction and horror web television series created by Mark and Ross Duffer for Netflix. Season 1 is composed of eight episodes. Netflix is yet to renew the series for a second season.
