Update: An earlier version of this article failed to mention that T-Mobile customers need to make the claim using the T-Mobile Tuesdays app before the unlimited data cap takes effect. We apologize for any inconvenience this oversight may have caused.
Well, it seems the “Pokemon Go” fever is catching in more ways than in the use of “Pokeballs.” For one thing, T-Mobile is offering free, unlimited data for the app. This means that players will have one less thing to worry about when playing the game aside from the battery issues and the potential of finding a dead body.
T-Mobile just announced that its customers will not have to worry about reaching their data cap when playing “Pokemon Go” anymore since they now have unlimited data that will last until August 2017, PC Mag reports. Now, players will only need to think about the batteries of their devices.
Now, the future of “Pokemon Go” is still in question and there is no telling how long the craze is going to last. It could go the way of “Clash of Clans” and have long-lasting popularity, or it could go the way of hundreds of once well-known apps that have been forgotten. Either way, users of the app can count on free data from T-Mobile for a year.
On that note, it doesn’t seem like “Pokemon Go” eats that much data to begin with. According to Droid-Life, a relatively active player can go through 300MB within a week, which isn’t all that costly compared to what smartphone owners typically use their data for.
As such, the offer of T-Mobile pertaining to the app has more to do with promoting its brand than actually giving users a sweet deal. Still, unlimited data is nothing to sneeze at.
The Un-carrier made headlines recently when its deal with Domino’s fell through after customers invaded the pizza chain in droves in order to get their free slices. With “Pokemon Go” being as or more popular than pizza at the moment, it does beg the question of whether or not T-Mobile will be able to sustain the kind of demand that the use of the app would inflict on their services.
