The secure messaging service Telegram has been having trouble in its homeland of Russia, where it has been officially banned since April. However, it seems it has also had to contend with other issues around the world, with Apple having prevented it from updating the app since around the same time. This reportedly led the service to miss the deadline for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set by the EU.
The iOS version of the Telegram app has apparently been barred from updating by Apple, which means that the version users are currently messaging with is about two months outdated. This is according to the platform’s CEO, Pavel Durov, who tweeted about the issue. He also expounded on the matter via a message on Telegram.
“Apple has been preventing Telegram from updating its iOS apps globally ever since the Russian authorities ordered Apple to remove Telegram from the App Store. Russia banned Telegram on its territory in April because we refused to provide decryption keys for all our users’ communications to Russia’s security agencies. We believe we did the only possible thing, preserving the right of our users to privacy in a troubled country,” Durov wrote.
The CEO also noted that Apple chose to side with the Russian government over this matter. The country made up only about 7 percent of the users of Telegram, but the update restriction was applied globally.
By blocking its ability to update the app on its devices, Apple has ensured that Telegram users with iOS units are unable to make full use of the service. Among the affected features are stickers as well as the control that users have over their data.
This is due to the fact that Telegram missed the GDPR deadline that was set on May 25 to make changes to its guidelines to suit the new laws. As Ars Technica reports, this resulted in users having significantly less control over their private information. They might be better off using another messaging app with this being the case.
