Telstra apologized after a MessageBank fault sent some customers delayed voicemail and missed-call alerts in batches, while saying Triple Zero (000) emergency calls, other voice calls and mobile data were unaffected.

The carrier said the MessageBank issue occurred Wednesday and had been fixed by the time it posted its outage notice. The notice did not give a precise restoration time, explain the technical cause or say how many customers were affected.

ABC News reported that some customers received text alerts for calls they said the named contacts had not made. The Guardian reported that thousands of users raised the issue and Telstra’s Facebook page received more than 3,000 comments from customers seeking answers.

Callers can leave a recorded message through MessageBank when a customer cannot answer or is already on another call.

The incident was separate from Telstra’s July 8 mobile network outage. Telstra said that disruption affected about 45% of calls and data sessions on its network at its peak, and that some Triple Zero calls were affected.
