Tesla and aftermarket accessory maker EVject have reached an agreement following a lawsuit over the safety of EVject’s Escape Connector. The new V1.2 version, featuring advanced thermal protection, is set to launch later this year, ensuring safer Supercharger use for Tesla drivers.
Tesla Lawsuit Sparks EV Community Debate, Leading to Collaboration with EVject on Safer Connector
Tesla and EVject, an aftermarket accessory manufacturer, have reached an agreement. According to reports, EVject emailed its consumers to announce the recall of its V1.0 and V1.1 Escape Connectors in favor of V1.2 connectors equipped with thermal protection.
Tesla filed a lawsuit against EVject in response to allegations that the company's product, which enables drivers to disconnect and drive away from a Supercharger without exiting their cabin, was unsafe due to its lack of overtemperature protection. As part of its lawsuit, Tesla sought to prohibit the importation of EVject Escape Connectors into the United States.
The Tesla lawsuit elicited polarizing responses from members of the EV community, who encouraged the company to collaborate with the aftermarket accessory manufacturer. The product is essential to ensure that customers feel more secure during Superchsuperchargings. Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the community's apprehensions and declared that he would conduct an inquiry. Given the most recent communication from EVject to its customers, Musk's investigation seems to have yielded results.
EVject Recalls Early Escape Connectors, Introduces V1.2 Model with Tesla-Approved Thermal Protection
In its communication to its consumers, EVject stated that it aspires to establish a positive partnership with Tesla. Additionally, the accessory manufacturer announced that it is recalling its V1.0 and V1.1 Escape Connectors. The company will now sell its V1.2 Escape Connector, which meets Tesla's standards. The V1.2 connector is anticipated to be shipping later this year.
“The EVject Escape Connector is evolving to meet the latest safety standards. Our upcoming version will feature advanced thermal sensors to enhance safety during charging. These improvements will help prevent potential hazards and ensure optimal charging performance. Upcoming version (v1.2) will include: (1) Advanced thermal sensors for enhanced safety; (2) Improved temperature monitoring; and (3) Compliance with the latest charging recommendations,” the company noted.
According to Teslarati, customers who have acquired EVject V1.0 and V1.1 Escape Connectors will receive a complimentary upgrade to a V1.2 connector. The accessory manufacturer requests that its customers return their V1.0 and V1.1 connectors. Upon completing this process, customers will be granted credit to purchase a V1.2 Escape Connector when it becomes available.
“Per Tesla’s request, we have discontinued the sale of V1.0 and V1.1 and are offering a complimentary upgrade to EVject Supervised V1.2, which includes built-in thermal protection, and works with all current Tesla charging options and vehicles,” the accessory maker reportedly noted in its email.
Tesla Charging acknowledged the Escape Connector recall by EVject in a post on its official social media account on X. "Tesla and OEMs will continue to collaborate with the industry to develop common sense regulatory standards and provide safe adapters," Tesla Charging stated in the post on X.
