‘The Americans’ season 5’s episode 12, titled "The World Council of Churches," will follow Philip and Elizabeth as they continue to struggle when they are forced to reach a difficult decision. Meanwhile, Matthew Rhys admitted his relief with the show finally ending with the sixth season.
The synopsis for “The World Council of Churches” posted on TV Guide reads, “As Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) grapple with a momentous decision, Tuan (Ivan Mok) takes matters into his own hands in the Morozov operation. Back in Russia, Oleg's (Costa Ronin) investigation collides with the realities of the Soviet system.”
The upcoming episode is set to put Philip and Elizabeth in a difficult position as they are forced to come to a decision that could change all their lives. The previous episode, titled “Dyatkovo,” threatened to disintegrate their long-time partnership as the two found themselves with differing opinions on a surprise assignment from the Centre.
Meanwhile, according to Entertainment Weekly, actor Matthew Rhys admitted his relief with the show ending during an appearance on ‘Entertainment Weekly: The Show’. He said, “I think we’ve done five great seasons… [The writers] were told two years ago, ‘You’ll have two more seasons,’ so to have two seasons to write very strongly toward a strong ending, I think, is a very privileged position to be in. And I am always weary of wringing the towel dry. I think when things are going well, pull the plug.”
The American period drama television series was created and produced by former CIA operative Joe Weisberg and premiered on FX on January 30, 2013. It is set in the 1980s, during the Cold War, and follows KGB officers Philip and Elizabeth as they pretend to be a plain married couple living in the suburbs of Washington D.C.
It was renewed for a fifth and sixth season last May 2016, with the sixth and final season scheduled to be released in 2018.
‘The Americans’ season 5’s episode 12, titled "The World Council of Churches," is scheduled to be released on May 23, 2017 on FX. It was directed by Nicole Kassell and written by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. It will be followed by episode 13, titled "The Soviet Division,” directed by Chris Long, written by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, and scheduled to be released on May 30.
