When it comes to buying data storage units, the prospect of a 4TB SSD is likely to be received as well as a year’s worth of free mobile data. However, when it costs about as much as an” Apple MacBook Pro,” the choice becomes a little more blurry. On the one hand is the most powerful SSD unit in the world and on the other is a complete laptop that happens to be one of the most popular in the market.
As Tech Crunch reports, the SSD unit costs about $1,500 when ordered through Amazon. In comparison, its less powerful sibling that only has half the storage capacity has a price tag of $700; still pricey, but a lot less than the 4TB 850 EVO.
Just to put things in perspective, one of the things that make the “850 EVO” so unique is the Triple Layer Cell NAND memory-chip technology and V-NAND technology that it was made with. This technology is exclusive to Samsung, which gives the South Korean company a significant edge when it comes to the high-end SSD market. This also explains why the powerful unit is so expensive.
Tech Times notes the 5-year warranty of the unit as well, which is a departure from the one or two years that an SSD is usually guaranteed for. Supposedly, this makes the deal sweeter, or at least a lot easier to swallow when looking at how much the thing costs.
Like other units in the lineup, the “850 EVO” boasts a significant advantage over traditional HDDs when it comes to reading and writing speeds, along with transfer efficiency that is several times that of the units with the spinning disks. This makes Samsung confident that SSDs are the future of computer storage and the 4TB units they are offering, albeit expensive, does give them a substantial advantage.
