‘The Crown’ season 2 is set to follow Queen Elizabeth II’s reign in the end of the 1950s through the 1960s. Possible storyline predictions include the birth of her other children with husband Prince Philip as well as the marriage of her sister Princes Margaret to Anthony Armstrong-Jones.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, lead actress Claire Foy revealed that season 2 of Netflix’s biopic drama series on Queen Elizabeth II’s early years as UK’s monarch will feature her reign from 1959 well through the ‘60s.
Foy said, “We literally pick up where we left off—in 1956. I think Peter’s [Morgan] taking [us up to] 63 or 64. We get into the 60s, and it is a whole other world happening. It’s really exciting, especially because we’ve had such a positive response and everyone’s been really encouraging. It just makes everybody, especially the crew, work even harder.”
She continued, “When we first started shooting, and it hadn’t come out. We were like, ‘Oh god, what if they hate it?’ And then we’ll [still have to film a second season] knowing that everyone hated it.”
The series was created and written by Peter Morgan and produced by Britain’s Left Bank Pictures and U.S.’s Sony Pictures Television for Netflix. Season 1 comprised of 10 episodes and released in its entirety on November 4, 2016. The series earned positive reviews from critics and audiences alike since its release.
The cast includes Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, Eilen Atkins as Queen Mary, Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother Queen Elizabeth, Jeremy Northam as Anthony Eden, Ben Miles as Peter Townsend, Jared Harris as King George VI, Greg Wise as Lord Louis Mountbatten, Stephen Dillane as Graham Sutherland, and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.
According to plot predictions posted on Moviepilot, season 2 may feature certain important events in Britain’s history including the Suez Canal Crisis, the birth of Elizabeth II and Philip’s other children, as well as Princess Margaret’s marriage to Anthony Armstrong-Jones.
It was revealed that the series plans to cover a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s life in every season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’ Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, "We're in production now on the second season… This is going to take Queen Elizabeth from age 29 to, presumably, the current day.”
‘The Crown’ season 2 is expected to be released by Netflix sometime in 2017.
