“The Flash's” Harry Wells, played by Tom Cavanagh, may just be the most unlucky character in the Arrowverse. But “The Flash” season 5 may be giving the beloved character a much-deserved break.
A victim of identity theft and murder at the hands of Reverse Flash, he has his wife die in most of the known timelines and is estranged from his daughter in the Earth-Two timeline, and things got even worse by the end of season 4.
Season 4 did not hold back any punches when it left us with Harry Wells almost a shell of his former self. His superior intelligence and years of work poured into his education were almost destroyed by the Thinking Cap he had made that backfired on him. While Harry Wells survived his ordeal, he no longer had the edge he used to have to be able to become a valued member of the team and chose to return to Earth-Two to reconcile with his daughter.
While technically a good ending for the Harry Wells of Earth-Two, this leaves a massive hole in the team when “The Flash” season 5 comes rolling into town. Much fan speculation has been on whether Cavanagh was leaving the team for good, which would break many fans' hearts as the people do love the character. Thankfully, Tom Cavanagh seems to be determined to give the beaten character a second chance in season 5.
In an interview during the San Diego Comic Convention 2018 with Cody Shultz, Cavanagh talked about bringing back a different version of Harry Wells from another Earth dimension who would have a more Sherlock Holmes-esque aspect to his personality. Brilliant but flawed in ways that will be revealed when the show's fifth season airs. “The Flash” season 5 will premiere to grace our broadcast slots on Oct. 9.
